Lismore Heritage Museum

The site was gifted to the Comann Eachdraidh Lios Mòr by one of the board members. His great aunts had lived in the cottage and were Cottars, as opposed to Crofters, employed at the flax mill at Kilandrist. The ruins of the cottage and a small byre were all that remained.

The Croft House was built from scratch by the local community and other artisans from Argyll (Timber A-frames) and Castle Douglas (reed thatching). The interior was furnished with original pieces from islanders’ homes and barns.

The Heritage Centre has an exhibition room, library, café, shop and hosts a wide variety of events. Insulated with sheep’s wool, clad in larch and roofed with turf, it blends into the landscape. The underfloor is heating fuelled by a GSHP.

The Centre has won both architectural and tourism awards and has made a valuable contribution to island life.
